Who’s Who

Dr. Raegar
Dr. Raegar was a scientist and weapons development engineer in the employ of the Imperial State at some point around the time of the Battle of
Yavin in 35 rS. No details are known of his education or his particular specialty, but one expects that he may have been numbered among the Galactic
Emperor’s cadre of “super-scientists” – known to have included Umak Leth, Borborygmus Gog, and the Lord Cronal – mentioned by Tam Azur-
Jamin KJ in “Droids, Technology and the Force: A Clash of Phenomena,” given his interest in harnessing the powers of mystical artifacts. Although
he appeared to have the Galactic Emperor’s ear, this did not equate to respect from others among the Galactic Emperor’s servants; in “Battle for the
Sunstar,” Raegar’s only appearance to date, Admiral Kazz openly mocked him to his face, calling his expedition “just one more of your foolish
ideas.”

Despite the obscurity of the Sanctuary Moon of Endor and its inhabitants – it had not even yet been properly catalogued (Sergeant Pfilbee Jhorn’s
scouting party was sent to survey the moon after the Battle of Hoth in 38 rS, according to
The Illustrated Star Wars Universe) – Raegar somehow
learned of the existence of the native Ewoks’ Sunstar, a mystical stone with preternatural properties, and convinced the Galactic Emperor to send
him and an Imperial Star Destroyer to the Sanctuary Moon to recover it. There, he used large combat ’droids and a personal weapons pod to steal
the Sunstar from the Ewoks’ Bright Tree Village and returned to Kazz’s Star Destroyer, where he decided that rather than present the Sunstar to the
Galactic Emperor – who was by then en route to rendezvous with the Star Destroyer – that he would use it to create a weapon of mass destruction
and seize control of the Empire for himself.

Although Raegar successfully used the Sunstar to assemble a new weapon in his lab aboard Kazz’s Star Destroyer, a group of Ewoks that had
implausibly snuck aboard the Star Destroyer interfered, and he accidentally fired on the Galactic Emperor’s shuttle before he was ready, only
managing to destroy part of the shuttle’s wing rather than killing him. Since the Ewoks stole the Sunstar and escaped, he was left defenseless on board
the Star Destroyer and was promptly arrested for high treason by Kazz’s stormtroopers. Raegar was dragged onto the Galactic Emperor’s shuttle
and never seen again. He was presumably summarily executed by the Galactic Emperor himself.

Raegar was a man of average height with yellow-green complexion and large, yellow-tinged eyes; he wore a peculiar black armor-like suit with red and
grey decorations. He made heavy use of ’droids and mechanical traps in his operations, and piloted a small spherical craft with manipulator arms and
blaster weaponry. Either the craft was equipped with simultaneous translation systems or Raegar himself was a gifted linguist, because he spoke
fluently with the Ewoks despite the fact that they did not speak
Basic but rather Ewokese, which was recognized by protocol interpreter C-3PO as
a primitive dialect of some other language in
Return of the Jedi.

Note that The Illustrated Star Wars Universe mentions that Jhorn’s was actually the second survey team sent to the Sanctuary Moon, and that the
first team had provided only “superficial reports,” identifying the “fuzzy and annoying Ewoks” as “the only significant life-forms inhabiting the
moon,” and completely missing the existence of a number of more dangerous species. As the only intelligent species Raegar and his ’droids
encountered on the Sanctuary Moon were the Ewoks, it is actually possible that records from his expedition were in fact the ‘first survey team’
whose work had displeased the Galactic Emperor and led to the dispatch of a second team to survey the moon and its suitability for certain
subsequent delicate operations.
