Janus Greejatus (d. 39 rS) was born to a wealthy family on Chommell Minor, a member state of the
Galactic Republic in the same Sector as Naboo in the Mid-Rim. According to the Official Site’s
Databank entry “Greejatus, Janus,” his family’s fortune had been threatened by “competition from non-
human workers” for generations, resulting in a “deeply ingrained hatred for aliens” that was actively
cultivated by his father. He pursued a successful career in local politics, and eventually gained the notice
of the sector’s representative to the Galactic Senate, Palpatine of Naboo, whom he succeeded as Senator
for the Chommell Sector when the latter was elected Supreme Chancellor in 3 rS in The Phantom Menace.
Greejatus’s career in the Senate was short-lived. “Greejatus, Janus” indicates that his “more closed-
borders approach” clashed with the “multicultural mindset” of Naboo, the most influential world in the
Sector, resulting in his recall in 5 rS and replacement by Horace Vancil, who had previously served as
economic and political advisor to the Queen of the Naboo. He became a senior aide in Palpatine’s
administration, and continued to serve in that capacity as late as 16 rS, as seen in Labyrinth of Evil.
Under the Galactic Empire, Greejatus was appointed a Privy Counsellor and became a leading figure in
the creation of the Commission for the Preservation of the New Order (COMPNOR), in particular
serving as the patron of the Department of Redesign, which would subsequently become involved in
some of the Empire’s most notorious atrocities. Greejatus’s appointment to the Imperial Ruling Council
and his control of Redesign apparently convinced him that he was capable of pursuing projects and
agendas without the Galactic Emperor’s knowledge or consent, and he became embroiled in a plot to
convince Grand Moff Governor Wilhuff Tarkin to use the Death Star to overthrow Palpatine and seize
power.
“Greejatus, Janus” indicates that Palpatine was in fact aware of Greejatus’s treachery, and kept him
close for the sake of keeping an eye on him. As a result, he was a member of the Galactic Emperor’s
retinue when he traveled to the second Death Star in 39 rS in Return of the Jedi; he was present during
the Galactic Emperor’s conversation with Darth Vader when he ordered Fleet Admiral Firmus Piett’s
waiting Imperial battle force to the far side of the Sanctuary Moon, and was killed when the Death Star
was destroyed over the Sanctuary Moon in the Battle of Endor, shortly after his arrival with the
Imperial party.

The Death Star II Expansion Set identifies him as a Force-sensitive member of the “Imperial council [sic]” (i.e., the Imperial Ruling Council), while
“Who are the gentlemen with the Emperor?” identifies him by name as a member of the Galactic Emperor’s Inner Circle (“Motti the Barbarian?” also
identifies him as one of the Inner Circle, which it calls a group of “ministers and governors who have earned the Emperor’s favor”). Along with his
counterpart Sim Aloo, Greejatus is pictured (but not named) in The Dark Side Sourcebook and identified as a dark side adept, given basic instruction
in the dark side of the Force by the Galactic Emperor himself at his private retreat world Byss; the generic dark side adept is said to possess a dark
side talisman and to have limited training in alchemy and simple manifestations of the Force, such as empathy, mentalic influence, and limited
psychokinesis. Greejatus was described by the Death Star II Expansion Set as being “very cruel at heart,” and as having “lusted for power his entire
life,” making him “predictable and controllable.”
Greejatus appears in the non-canonical Invention section’s “Surely You Can’t Be Serious: The Life and Times of a Rounding Error,” in which he
discusses the implications of a embezzlement scandal with fellow Privy Counsellor Lord Bal Jaset; Senator Mon Mothma (Chandrila) arranges for
him to be served a subpoena ad testificandum after the resignation and “accidental death” of Greejatus’s client, the non-canonical character Grand
Moff Governor Josef Reglius, and calls him “a veritable megalomaniac” (the non-canonical character Senator Mushayr calls him “a financial genius”).
As a result of Mothma’s machinations, Greejatus is passed over for a vacant seat on the Ruling Council, in favor of Kren Blista-Vanee.
