Who’s Who

Jona T. Stark
Jona T. Stark was a senior non-commissioned officer serving as a drill instructor at one of the Imperial Navy’s officer candidate schools (location
unknown) some time before the Battle of Hoth in 38 rS. Stark appeared in
TIE Fighter: The Stele Chronicles, where he was in charge of the two-
month indoctrination of the group of officer candidates that included the future
Tan Maarek Stele. He was a tall, physically imposing man — Stele
noticed that he was “more than a head taller than anyone in the room” and had “massive hands” that could have “easily snapped a man’s neck” —
who informed the officer candidates that “the Emperor is your life” and “I am his Voice”; the intimidating nature afforded him by his physical
stature and intensity was amplified by his disfigurement, as one of his eyes was “a memory behind crudely stitched skin.”

Stark’s appearance in
TIE Fighter: The Stele Chronicles is somewhat problematic, as he is said to wear the Marine rifleman’s T.I.E. Armoured
Spacesuit (so identified in “Soldiers of the Empire!”), albeit with “an Imperial crest on the right breastplate” that “literally screamed out the man’s
importance”; despite this, and the fact that he is indoctrinating Naval Aviator officer candidates, Stark identifies himself as “Senior Master
Sergeant,” a United States Air Force style rank, wholly inappropriate to Stark’s position (assuming his pay grade is correct, Stark ought to be a
master sergeant, although the inferior grade of gunnery sergeant is more likely).

Stark is mentioned in passing in the non-canonical
Invention section’s “Defender of the Empire,” where this author has had Captain Stele refer to
him as “Senior Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Stark.”
