Who’s Who

Terrinald Screed
Terrinald Screed was a Republic Judicial marshal in the service of the Galactic Republic in the early 10s rS, who subsequently became a prominent
space warfare officer (SWO) and war hero during the Clone War of 13 - 16 rS, and then a leading figure of the Imperial Navy thereafter, remaining
prominent until his death in the post-Endor period. According to “Carida Backs Military Creation Act,” Screed was an alumnus of the Military
Academy at Carida, and subsequently entered the Republic Judicial Department; in his biography of Palpatine of Naboo in
The New Essential Guide
to Characters
, the scribe mentions “Commander Screed” as having been one of the “key personalities” within the Judicial Department with whom
Palpatine formed alliances during his tenure as Galactic Senator for Naboo and Chommell Sector (ca 27 BrS - 3 rS), setting a convenient marker by
which Screed’s career can be measured; he must have been a figure of some significance in the Judicial Department some time before the Naboo Crisis
of 3 rS (seen in
The Phantom Menace). He was among the earliest supporters of Palpatine and his New Order.

Labyrinth of Evil indicates that the Republic’s ‘hawks’ are more commonly called ‘Sand Panthers,’ and Screed was among the more prominent Sand
Panthers of the Republic, advocating strong response to the Separatist agitation and calling for the passage of the Military Creation Bill to provide a
fully-reorganized Army and Navy to protect the Republic from Separatist violence and secessionism. On 13:3:14, Screed’s op-ed piece (“A
Protected Republic is Long Overdue”) ran in the Coco District Edition of HoloNet News, under the feature “Point/Counterpoint: Military Creation
Act,” in which he started by stating that “the Jedi cannot be everywhere,” and that “the Republic’s climate and lenient laws have fomented private
armies of prodigious size,” that “droid armies are now cheaper, quicker and easier to maintain than Sector Forces,” and that “Sector Forces can now
be turned against us, with more and more seceding from the Republic” (this would later prove to be particularly unpleasant in the case of “The
Dreadnaughts of Rendili”). He wrote that “I do not want my child to grow up knowing war,” but at the same time “I do want my child to know the
Republic, and I fear that our current course will not allow for it,” and cited the shortcomings of Planetary Security and Sector Forces during the Stark
Hyperspace Conflict, calling for “a unified military coordinated from Coruscant,” drawing on the examples of “the Great Sith War, the Kanz
Disorders, the Virujansi Uprising – times when a unified Republic Navy and Army were strong.”

On 13:4:18, Screed was quoted in “Carida Backs Military Creation Act” as applauding the loyalty of the

Caridans after the Cardian government announced its support for the Military Creation Bill, “offering
their renowned academic institutions for Republic use should an army be created.” Screed – the author
of the news item took care to point out that he was a graduate of the Military Academy in a subtle
attack on his credibility, but curiously describes Screed, a single man, as “an alumni of the Carida
Academy” (alumni is the nominative plural form of the second declension noun alumnus) – commented
that “with institutes such as the academies of Carida, Raithal and Corulag, we will produce a proud
military force capable of maintaining order within the Republic and quelling those treasonous elements
that would split our union.”

According to “Vigilante Task Force Departs to Engage Separatists,” on 13:5:2 Screed confirmed to the

holomedia that Captain Zozridor Slayke, Commanding Officer, RJC Scarlet Thranta, had led his crew
in transforming his ship into the vigilante Freedom’s Sons militia, abandoning his patrol near Sluissi
space the previous week and departing to engage Separatist militants; despite his ‘Sand Panther’
affiliation, Screed condemned this act, calling Slayke and his crew “radicals, regardless of their intentions.”
On 13:5:9, he told the holomedia in “Jedi Taskforce Dispatched to Reel in Thranta” that “at 0400 this
morning, a taskforce of 12 Jedi and 30 Judiciaries left Coruscant for the Sluis sector in hopes of getting
Captain Slayke and the crew of the Scarlet Thranta to stand down from their unauthorized campaign
in Separatist space”; he also confirmed that the Sluis Sector had posted a 45,000 credit bounty on
Slayke’s head, but pointed out that the bounty was illegally posted and insisted that no “sanctioned
independent or guild hunter” should pursue the bounty. On 13:5:16, Screed was questioned by the
holomedia about the Sluissi Khedive’s offer to assist this task force in capturing Freedom’s Sons, but
Screed very properly declined to comment, according to “Sluis Van Offer Met with Doubt.” Slayke
and Freedom’s Sons would later be pardoned by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and played a major
role in the Battle of Praesitlyn in mid-15 rS, as detailed in Jedi Trial.

Screed was next mentioned in “Duro Falls to Grievous: Confederacy Now Controls Vital System,” in
which it was announced in the 15:3:02 Core Edition of Republic HoloNet News that “the Office of the
Supreme Chancellor has given Admiral Terrinald Screed complete authority in the deployment of
Coruscant Planetary Defense resources,” although Armand Isard – the Director, Senate Bureau of
Intelligence – assured holomedia reporters that “such actions are not based on any intelligence reports
indicating a strike against Coruscant, but rather were ‘prudent precautionary measures.’” This abrupt
rise in rank calls “Commander” Screed’s earlier role into question; whereas in the Freedom’s Sons affair
Screed appeared to be an official spokesman for the Judicial Department, here he is seen to have
operational command and control of the defenses of the capital of the Republic itself, and an official
spokesman can hardly be said to be a ‘key personality,’ anyway. It is possible, therefore, that
“commander” referred to Screed’s office (Commander of the Republican Guard, perhaps?) rather
than his rank.

The issue of Screed’s rank is made even more confusing by
The New Essential Chronology, in which the Historical Council describes the Republic’s
siege of the Confederate-controlled shipyards of Foerost “practically in Coruscant’s backyard,” and the ensuing clashes between the Techno Union’s
Bulwark Fleet under Dua Ningo and the Republic’s Victory Fleet under “Captains Terrinald Screed and Jan Dodonna.” Here, Screed is seen as a task
force commander and one of the first SWOs ever to command a
Victory class Star Destroyer, teaming with Dodonna to engage Ningo at Ixtlar,
Alsakan, and Basilisk within the heart of the Core Worlds, before finally reinforcing Dodonna at Anaxes and disintegrating Ningo’s flagship in a close-
quarters broadside; nevertheless, Screed sustained severe injuries in the Battle of Anaxes, and “required cybernetic reconstruction to survive” – this is
not, however, the origin of his famous, trademark “electronic eyepatch,” as he was seen wearing it two years earlier in  “Point/Counterpoint: Military
Creation Act,” – and he and Dodonna were hailed on Coruscant as war heroes. Given that
The New Essential Chronology places this event a month
after the fall of Duro, “Captain” Screed can only refer to the fact that he assumed personal command of one of the new Victory Star Destroyers, not
to a post captaincy (although, as commander of a squadron, he ought to be a courtesy commodore rather than a courtesy captain).

The Official Site’s Databank article on Screed, “Screed, Admiral,” notes that he was “one of the first highly placed officers in the new Imperial
Navy” after Palpatine’s acclamation as Galactic Emperor in 16 rS (seen in
Revenge of the Sith). The scholars describe him as “one of the Emperor’s
top aides during the early days of the Empire,” and
Rebellion even goes so far as to call him “formerly the Emperor’s right-hand man and a
distinguished military commander.” “The Dark Forces Saga, Part 4: Of the Crudest Matter” mentions that the Twi’lek slave Bocas’eca became “the
manservant of the pitiless bigot Vice-Admiral Terrinald Screed” after the rise of the Empire, but Screed eventually handed over his slave to
Inquisitor
Jerec after the dark Jedi Master sensed that Boc was sensitive to the Force. During this early era, Screed “operated in the fringes of the Empire”
according to “Screed, Admiral,” and was responsible for the Great Heep’s placement on Biitu (seen in
The Great Heep), and subsequently allied
himself with Governor Koong of Roon, within the Cloak of the Sith dust cloud (in “Tail of the Roon Comets”), humoring a number of Koong’s
schemes such as “sabotaging the Roon Colonial games” (in “The Roon Games”) and capturing treasure hunter Mungo Baobab after he discovered the
source of the valuable Roonstones (in “Across the Roon Sea”), but advised against the use of biological agents on a rebellious province (in “The
Frozen Citadel”). In the end, Screed was unable to obtain the Roonstones, and “Screed, Admiral” says that he simply “had to admit defeat, and
moved on.”

“Screed, Admiral” writes that “his position faltered in the coming years,” but Screed “nonetheless remained a presence in the Imperial Navy,” and
was seen wearing the rank insignia of a high admiral in
Rebellion, where he was described as “formerly the Emperor’s right-hand man,” but still said
to be able to be “trusted with nearly any space battle.” After the Galactic Emperor’s death in the Battle of Endor in 39 rS, “Screed, Admiral” states
that he “emerged as one of many squabbling warlords attempting to rebuild the New Order in the power vacuum left by Palpatine’s death,” and
Force Heretic I: Remnant mentions that he was eventually executed by the self-proclaimed Imperial Warlord Zsinj.

Screed appears in the non-canonical
Invention section’s “The First Meeting,” wherein Senator Palpatine mentions that Admiral Screed provides what
military expertise he requires, and Sanya, Baroness Tagge proposes that he take
Captain General (Retired) Indutiomarus Trachta into his clientele to
provide “a different view of things,” given that he had “different experiences from Screed’s.” He later appears in “
A Visit from the Admiral,” in
which Admiral Screed is Chairman of the Supreme Defense Council and Palpatine’s “chief deputy in the war on the enemies of the state,” and he
conducted a surprise inspection of the Victory Project under Vice Admiral (Select) L. N. Jerjerrod, and ordered the project to proceed despite a
scheduled engine rebuild (a year later
The New Essential Chronology mentioned “Captain” Screed as one of the first to command a Victory Star
Destroyer, produced nearly six months ahead of schedule by the Victor Initiative Project, and
Revenge of the Sith: The Visual Dictionary mentioned a
War Council Advisory Panel), and he appears again in “
The President’s War Room” in the same capacity, Chairman of the Supreme Defense
Council. In “
The Good Old Days,” Screed appears first as a member of the Government, and is later mentioned to have been replaced as Supreme
Commander of Imperial Forces by Darth Vader – much to Senator Gracian Pild’rth’s annoyance. He is mentioned as having held the rank of Admiral
of the Navy and the office of First Space Lord and Chief of Naval Operations (1SL/CNO), the professional head of the Imperial Navy, in “
Lost and
Found: A Study in Corruption (Part III).”
