Who’s Who

The Scholars
The Scholars are the anonymous encylcopedists who are the notional authors of the Star Wars Encyclopedia, as according to Mr. Stephen J.
Sansweet’s introduction, “the ‘conceit’ behind this
Star Wars encyclopedia is that it was compiled by a group of scholars about twenty-five or so
standard years after the Battle of Endor,” that is, just after the events of Under a Black Sun, the final Young Jedi Knights trilogy (it is unknown if
the scholars have any connection to
the Scribe, who wrote about two years later in 62 rS). Mr. Sansweet admits in “About This Book” (the
introduction) that “naturally, there’s a bit of a New Republic spin on entries” as it’s “impossible to be morally ambiguous about the depredations
inflicted on untold billions of sentient beings by the Empire.” The scholars’ work suffers from the same malady as all historians’ and
encyclopedists’: they are limited by their source materials. Mr. Sansweet anticipates conflicts with other sources, writing that “while much
information about the Empire and the Old and New Republics has become available to the scholars, there still are mysteries to be resolved and
people, places, and events yet to be uncovered.” Errors in the
Star Wars Encyclopedia may therefore be regarded as resulting from the scholars’
bias, or carelessly ambiguous wording, or else to the unavailability of reliable records. The scholars’ work is especially useful in that it provides a
useful guide to how New Republic partisans view the events of the
Star Wars universe, albeit those partisans of a scholarly bent.

Unqualified references to “the scholars” throughout this site generally refer to these encyclopedists.
