Who’s Who

Trachta
Trachta was a Grand Moff of the Empire in the service of the Imperial State in the late 30s rS. He has
appeared only in “Betrayal,” set in the weeks immediately prior to the Battle of Yavin in 35 rS; he was
seen as a pale-skinned man with black hair who wore a customized life-support suit of armor over a black
duty uniform and whose face was concealed behind artificial eyes and a breath-mask not unlike the
respiratory intake and respiratory vent portion of Darth Vader’s helmet (Grand Moff Bartam wondered
aloud if Trachta could challenge Vader “with all this hardware” in Trachta’s body). Trachta had been a
longtime friend of the Galactic Emperor, having known him for “close to thirty years,” according to Trachta,
and the Galactic Emperor apparently valued him so much that he would have “applied [Trachta’s]
considerable skills” to the Death Star Project “were [he] not so necessary to my operations here” on
Imperial Center. Despite this, Trachta was disgusted by the Sith Lords — “just like the Jedi,” he remarked
to Moff Kadir — and their “theocracy of two”; he arranged a conspiracy with Grand Moff Bartam,
General Skosef, Moff Kadir (the Commander of Imperial Center Security), the assassin Gauer, and others
to use a group of 100 stormtroopers (specially indoctrinated since 25 rS to be loyal only to Trachta himself)
in order to reduce the strength of the Imperial Royal Guard, kill Darth Vader while he was away on a mission,
and finally dethrone the Galactic Emperor himself.

Trachta failed, however, to anticipate dissension within the ranks of the conspirators, and ultimately they all

killed one another. Trachta used the artificial eye on the back of his head to foil an assassination attempt on
him by Gauer’s ‘droid, but was in turn shot and killed by Gauer himself in an undisclosed location
somewhere on Imperial Center (possibly the Imperial Information Center within the Imperial Palace; the
doors of the room have Death Star-like images on them). Bartam was shot in the back of the head by Skosef
(in turn shot by Bartam’s stormtrooper bodyguard), Vader survived the attempt on his life and killed the
conspirators’ agent on the scene, Captain Deszetes, and the Galactic Emperor proved to be rather more
dangerous than had been anticipated, killing Kadir’s stormtroopers and Kadir himself with Sith lightning.

The author has speculated in “
All the Emperor’s Men” that Trachta may have briefly replaced Ars Dangor
as President of the Imperial Ruling Council, explaining the Galactic Emperor’s remark about his importance
to operations on Imperial Center (Trachta would have been head of the regency council at that time); notably
he holds the rank of Grand Moff of the Empire, but does not appear to have any sort of gubernatorial
function (cf. Moff Kadir, who is not a Sector Governor). Trachta appears in the non-canonical Invention
section’s “The First Meeting,” in which he is first introduced to Palpatine by Sanya, Baroness Tagge, and
said to be a highly decorated officer from a Mid-Rim Security Force, with rank of captain general; he appears
again in “The Good Old Days” as Minister of the Interior in Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s first Government,
being promoted to General Minister and Head of the Government, a position he continues to hold in Palpatine’s
war cabinet in “The President’s War Room.” Trachta survives a number of assassination attempts,
accumulating more and more cybernetic body parts until he is finally assassinated by Gauer during his term as President of the Ruling Council.
He is given the non-canonical given name Indutiomarus.
