Who’s Who

Ulric, Baron Tagge
Ulric Tagge, Baron Tagge, was a nobleman who rose to prominence in the mid 30s rS. A scion of the baronial House of Tagge – descended from
one of the Founders of the Republic, according to “House of Tagge Sides with Loyalists”
(he is possibly the son of Sanya, Baroness Tagge,
mentioned therein)
– he was the youngest male of five siblings, and according to Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds he grew up on the House’s
throne world Tepasi in the Core Worlds Region, “surrounded by his ancient family’s wealth and luxury. Ulric’s oldest brother
Orman acceded to the
barony Tagge at age seventeen in 15 rS, according “New Tagge Baron Leads Tech Initiative”;
Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds states that his
brothers “Orman and
Silas awed Ulric,” and that he “was happy only in the company of his sister Domina.” Like his older brother Cassio, Ulric
became a commissioned officer in the Imperial Armed Forces, and was regarded as “a competent if unimaginative officer”; ultimately he was
promoted to the rank of major general, and he was given “temporary command of a flotilla of Tagge warships” participating in the blockade of the
Gordian Reach Sector after the Battle of Yavin in 35 rS (Cassio was killed in the battle itself, having been aboard the Death Star when it was
destroyed).

It was in this capacity that Ulric was first seen in 35 rS in “Return to Tatooine!” – he was mentioned in an earlier issue when Han Solo remarked that
“the Empire wouldn’t hit a Tagge family ship... one brother’s an Imperial fleet commander!” in “The Empire Strikes!” – , when he met with his
eldest brother the Lord Tagge aboard his own command ship, an Imperial battle cruiser larger even than the commonest Imperial Star Destroyer . The
Lord Tagge used Ulric’s military connections to ensure cooperation with his Omega Frost plan, while he appeared again in “Saber Clash!” to oversee
the transfer of the Omega Frost conductor towers from his Star Destroyer to the Lord Tagge’s mining explorer. The Lord Tagge and his brother Dr.
Silas Tagge – second in line for the barony – were apparently killed when the Omega Frost plan went disastrously wrong in “Thunder in the Stars!”,
and “Dark Lord’s Gambit” explains that immediately after the Lord Tagge’s mining explorer was destroyed a small flotilla of rebel gunships led by
the
SS Millennium Falcon attacked Ulric’s command ship near Junction, destroying it and forcing him to take refuge in an escape craft. Immediately
upon transferring his command to a new battle cruiser, he received word that both his surviving elder brothers had been killed, and he was the new
Baron Tagge, despite having been the second to last of all his siblings in the line of inheritance. Shortly after the destruction of his Star Destroyer, the
new Lord Tagge filed a report that his ship had been destroyed as a result of “a standard blockade action.”

The Lord Tagge received an unexpected visit from Darth Vader in “Dark Lord’s Gambit” – Vader calls him “the fleet commander maintaining the
Imperial blockade” – and the Dark Lord of the Sith demanded the truth from him regarding the Omega Frost plot and the loss of his Star Destroyer.
Faced with the prospect of a dangerously angry Sith Lord, the Lord Tagge confessed the details of their plot; Vader then revealed that neither the old
Baron nor Silas had been killed, and both were being kept in suspended animation. In exchange for his cooperation, Vader promised that the two
would remain in stasis (the alternative, the Sith Lord explained, was to have all three of them brought before the Galactic Emperor “with a full
account of your fiasco against the rebels”). Ultimately, the Lord Tagge decided to acquiesce to Vader’s demands, on the questionable basis that if he
were to be disgraced, only his sister would remain, and “a girl like her just isn’t ready to assume leadership of the House of Tagge’s vast holdings.”
Vader, satisfied, agreed to let sleeping Tagges lie. The Lord Tagge paid a visit to Domina on the Order of the Sacred Circle’s cloister world
Monastery, as seen in “Red Queen Rising!”;
Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds says that after that he “retired from military service to take
command of the family industries.” He has not appeared or been mentioned since assuming office as chairman of the Tagge Company (TaggeCo.) in
35 rS

Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds describes the Lord Tagge as being proficient in hand-to-hand combat and a pistol marksman, being a leader that
inspires confidence in his men and has a high degree of access to additional resources. He is knowledgeable of “Core culture” and skilled in
astrogation, diplomacy, piloting (especially light armored vehicles), ship command, and has experience with blaster pistols and rifles, heavy
weapons, and edged weapons. He regularly carries a SoroSuub ELG-3A blaster pistol (probably having been issued it, as it is otherwise unthinkable
that a member of the House of Tagge should carry a sidearm manufactured by a rival of TaggeCo.), a cred stick with a maximum spending limit of
17,500 credits, and wears a signet ring with the “House of Tagge seal.” As a member of one of the Ancient Houses, he has probably received “special
training” (Darth Vader remarked in
Star Wars: The Original Radio Drama, that the similarly pedigreed Princess Leia of Alderaan “has had access to
many family and government secrets” and has been “specifically trained and prepared to withstand conventional questioning,” making normal
interrogation and torture useless, as they would require “levels of pain so high as to risk killing her”).

He appears in the non-canonical
Invention section’s The Test of Wills as one of the six warlords who joined with the Emperor’s Ruling Circle in the
assault that recaptured Coruscant from the New Republic, under the title “Generalissimo the Baron Tagge.” In that story, he personally takes charge
of operations on Imperial Center, aided by his Chief of General Staff, Colonel General Perceval “Chief” Bast. It is said that he has spent lavishly to
equip his forces with the finest weapons and defenses, including deflector shields and surface-to-air missile batteries for his All-Terrain Armored
Transports.
